Her father owned or operated grocery shops all over the Southwest, which permitted Helen to increase up in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado and Wyoming.

In 1942, Helen attended The College of Arizona in which she majored in record. There she met and married Lt. Dave S. Shackelford, on November 25, 1944.
